hip surgery...why not?!

The plan was to start posting about the 14 days of {love} 3 days ago, but as you can see that didn't happen.  Instead things got a little crazy around here, to say the least...

Here's the story...

Ryan likes to ride his bike to work everyday, and I mean e v e r y d a y.  Even when it is bitter cold {like the -8 degrees he did a few weeks ago} and through snow.  So on Friday when he took his bike to work it was no different than what he did all the time.  Friday, however, turned out to be an icy day and around 4 pm we got some freezing rain that quickly made everything very slick, but you couldn't really tell it.  When Ryan went to leave for work Friday night at 6 pm he didn't think the sidewalks were all that icy, but as soon as he turned his bike on it he wiped out and happened to land hard on his hip.  After texting me I rushed to pick him up.  He painfully was able to make it in the car and he wanted to drive home and just rest on it and maybe see the doctor in the morning.  When we got home he wasn't able to get out of the car at all and we knew something was very wrong.  After a friend allowed me to drop my kids off for the night, we headed for the ER.  It was crazy busy with all the accidents coming in from the ice!  We waited 3 hours before Ryan could be seen!  That was a l o n g painful wait.... After the x-rays we knew for certain that Ryan had broken his hip!

His hip?!  Really, do you know anyone else at the age of 35 who has to have hip surgery!  Pretty unbelievable.  Ryan was admitted that night and went through hip surgery Saturday morning.  They had to put a couple of pins in his bone to hold them back together.  The surgery went really well the doctor kept saying because of his age...I don't think he ever gets to work on such young bones :).  When the doctor was going over care after surgery he kept saying using a walker and finally changed it saying, well I guess you really wouldn't want to use a walker, crutches then for you.  {Ryan could now swap stories in the nursing home!}  He has done pretty well since surgery with very little pain medication, the crazy boy doesn't ever think he needs it.  After passing his crutches and stairs test with flying colors he was released from the hospital this afternoon.

Now all of this is a little "deja vuish".  You see if you don't know Ryan's story this has all kind of happened before.  Three years ago on a cold winter day {thankfully not icy}, Ryan was riding his then bike {that is motorcycle} home from work when he wiped out and landed hard on his left side {left foot last time}.  He was taken to that same hospital where it was quickly determined that most of the bones in his ankle and foot were broken and he would need surgery on it.  Just like this time, he had to have metal put into his body {at that time it was his foot and ankle} to hold it all back together.  And just like this time he went home on crutches.  It was a several month recovery last time, just as we can expect this time.

 So what is the moral of this story?  Ryan just needs to stay home?!  {Maybe}  Ryan can't be trusted on any 2 wheeled transportation device?  {I certainly think so :)}  I banned him from the motorcycle last time and that's when he took up biking...so what's next??  Maybe he'll be walking on foot...or I told him I will pick up and drop him off at the same time I do for Avery every day {I don't think he would like those office hours}...or we saw a taxi today that said it was handicapped accessible, maybe that's the one :)!

All kidding aside, we are very thankful for everyone's kind thoughts and prayers.  You all are awesome!  We are blessed that Ryan is still in our life and we are truly grateful.
  He is enjoying being home and even made it up the stairs tonight!  The kiddos & I are glad to have him back here and are excited for our snow day together tomorrow!
  {Just no more accidents!}

{We will return to our regularly scheduled program tomorrow...hopefully!}

The comment about the doc and working on young bones made me laugh. Hope he has a speedy recovery. Maybe he should try a recumbent bike...closer to the ground. :)

Haha, yes I think I've seen another person at Garmin come in on one of those bikes. Maybe that will be next :)!
